Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

What strikes me most about Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is how he carries a sacred tradition into the mainstream without diluting it. Inheriting the Qawwali legacy of his uncle Nusrat could have been a crushing burden, yet he turned it into a launchpad, sweeping Bollywood's top playback honors in 2011. I find his voice less about virtuosic display and more about a kind of devotional ache that travels across language and faith. For me he is one of those rare artists who proves that spiritual music can chart globally while still sounding like prayer.
