Richard Barbieri

Richard Barbieri is, to me, the kind of musician whose fingerprints are everywhere yet rarely announced. Emerging with the new wave band Japan, he became the long-serving keyboardist anchoring Porcupine Tree, the most tenured member besides Steven Wilson. I value him as a sound designer first: someone who builds atmosphere, texture and shadow rather than chasing obvious melody. That patient, architectural approach to sonic space is exactly what gives those records their depth. Born in London in 1957, he is a quiet craftsman whose restraint I find far more impressive than flashier showmanship ever manages to be.
