My Take
Richard Mulligan earns my respect as a craftsman of comedy, the hardest discipline in acting. A Bronx-born, Columbia-educated character actor, he turned supporting and lead comic roles in Soap and Empty Nest into two Emmy wins, in 1980 and 1989. Living somewhat in the shadow of his director brother Robert, he carved out his own enduring place on television and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. What I appreciate is that he made people laugh without ever seeming to chase the spotlight. When he died in 2000, he left behind work that still holds up beautifully.
