Roansy Contreras

Roansy Contreras is the kind of player who makes you sit up a little straighter when his name appears in a lineup. Born in the Dominican Republic in 1999 and signed by the Yankees as a teenager, he came up through one of the most scrutinized pipelines in baseball before landing with the Pittsburgh Pirates, then the Angels, Orioles and Rockies, and now the Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan. His stuff as a pitcher is genuinely interesting — lively fastball, a breaking ball he keeps refining — and at his age there's still plenty of runway ahead. I find myself rooting for the guys who grind in smaller markets without the fanfare, and Roansy fits that bill. Mid-twenties, starting a new chapter in Japan, still growing. That's the most exciting kind of player to watch.
