My Take

Roy Cheung is a Hong Kong actor I'd put squarely in the "character specialist" category, and I mean that as a compliment. He built his reputation playing Triad gangsters across a stretch of films, which is the kind of typecasting that can either trap an actor or make him indispensable. With Cheung it clearly became the latter; that menacing screen presence is exactly what those crime dramas needed. Born in 1963, he's part of the generation that defined Hong Kong cinema's most exportable era. I find performers like him underrated abroad, because the genre travels but the faces inside it rarely get the individual credit they earn.
