My Take
Ruben Östlund is one of the most uncomfortable filmmakers working today, and I mean that as the highest praise. From a small Swedish island to two Palmes d'Or, he has built a body of work that dissects human vanity, cowardice and hypocrisy with surgical cruelty. Force Majeure, The Square and Triangle of Sadness all leave you squirming while you laugh. What I admire is his refusal to let the audience, or himself, off the hook. He turns social embarrassment into cinema. Few directors trust discomfort as a tool the way he does, and that nerve is exactly why his films stay with me.
