My Take

What impresses me most about Don Adams is the sheer discipline behind playing a bumbling idiot convincingly. Maxwell Smart only works because a sharp mind was engineering every fumble, and three straight Emmy wins prove he was the best in the business at it. The detail I keep returning to, though, is his Purple Heart from his Marine service in the Pacific. A man who survived real combat later built a career out of gentle, deadpan absurdity, and that range from genuine danger to scripted slapstick says everything about his depth. He is exactly the kind of craftsman comedy too often takes for granted.

Overview

Donald James Yarmy (April 13, 1923 – September 25, 2005), known professionally as Don Adams, was an American actor. In his five decades on television, he was best known as bumbling Maxwell Smart (Secret Agent 86) in the television situation comedy Get Smart (1965–1970, 1995), which he also sometimes directed and wrote. Adams won three consecutive Emmy Awards for his performance in the series (1967–1969).
