My Take
What I admire about Russell Howard is his relentlessly upbeat brand of comedy. Most topical comics mine the news for cynicism; he mines it for hope. Coming out of Bristol and breaking through on Mock the Week before landing his own shows, he built a career on machine-gun delivery and a genuinely warm worldview. That 2006 Best Compère win feels like recognition of his real gift, which is making a room feel good rather than just laugh. In an era of corrosive irony, a comedian who leaves you a little more optimistic than he found you is rarer and more valuable than people give him credit for.
