My Take

Salif Diao is a story I find genuinely stirring. Leaving Kedougou in inland Senegal for France at seventeen, he broke through at Monaco and helped them lift the Trophee des Champions and the Division 1 title. He never nailed down a regular starting spot there and moved on to Sedan in 2000, but it is that refusal to quit that earns my respect. A 186 cm defensive midfielder, he was the unglamorous destroyer every great side needs. I am drawn to players who carve a path from somewhere overlooked to Europe's top flight. Diao did exactly that, and quietly opened doors for those behind him.
