Sam Coffey

I have a soft spot for players who own the unglamorous jobs, and Sam Coffey is exactly that. A defensive midfielder from Sleepy Hollow, New York, she earned three All-American honors across Boston College and Penn State before reaching Manchester City and the United States national team. The number six role rarely draws highlight reels, yet it's the spine of any serious side. Watching someone commit fully to breaking up play and recycling possession tells me a lot about their character. Coffey strikes me as a quietly essential player, the kind teammates trust before fans notice.
