Samir Handanović

Samir Handanović is the archetype of the dependable last line of defence, a 193 cm Slovenian goalkeeper from Ljubljana who anchored Inter Milan for years. What I respect most is the climb: acquired by Udinese, then loaned out to Treviso, Lazio and Rimini before earning his place, a grind rather than a gift. Goalkeepers rarely get the adoration strikers do, yet they shoulder the cruelest pressure. That he now coaches Inter's under-17 side feels like the natural next chapter, passing hard-won wisdom downward. I have a real soft spot for those who guard the goal.
