My Take
Sayaka Murata is, to me, one of the most quietly radical writers working in any language today. What impresses me is not just the global success of Convenience Store Woman, translated into more than thirty languages, but the unnerving precision with which she interrogates what we call normal. Earthlings still rattles around in my head. She takes the mundane surfaces of Japanese life and peels them back to reveal something alien underneath. I admire that she never raises her voice to make her point. For me she represents Japanese literature confidently meeting the world on its own strange terms, and I will read whatever she writes next.
