Schoolboy Q

Schoolboy Q is a rapper I rate for the texture he brings rather than chart polish. Born Quincy Hanley in Wiesbaden, Germany, but shaped by Crenshaw High in Los Angeles, he came up the unglamorous way, dropping mixtapes like ScHoolboy Turned Hustla in 2008 before any real recognition. That hustle shows in the music. I appreciate that he leaned into a gritty, lived-in West Coast sound instead of chasing trends, and the stylized capital-H in ScHoolboy feels like a small flag of identity. To me he reads as an artist who earned his lane gradually, and that slow build gives his work real staying power.
