Scott Avett

Scott Avett, to me, represents the conscience of American folk-rock. Born in Cheyenne, Wyoming and now rooted in North Carolina, he's the elder Avett brother who anchors The Avett Brothers on banjo while also handling harmonica, drums, piano and guitar. Their 2008 climb up the independent charts felt earned rather than engineered. What moves me is the honesty in his Americana, melodies that prize sincerity over polish. There's a warmth in brotherly harmony that no studio trick can fake, and that intimacy is exactly what wins me over. He makes music that feels like it comes from somewhere real.
