My Take

Shane Douglas, born Troy Martin, is one of those wrestlers whose importance you only fully grasp if you followed the wars of the 1990s. As the self-styled Franchise of ECW, he embodied that scrappy, anti-establishment energy that made the promotion feel dangerous and alive. He bounced through WCW, the WWF, XPW, and TNA, but it's ECW where his legacy really lives for me. I also find it telling that he later worked as a teacher; there's a reflective, articulate side to him that surfaces in interviews. He was a divisive figure, but you can't tell the story of that era without him.
