Sharleen Spiteri

Sharleen Spiteri is the unmistakable voice of Texas, and her contralto remains one of the most identifiable instruments in British pop. Bursting through in 1989 with I Don't Want a Lover and the two-million-selling Southside, she has fronted the band with a steadiness that I find admirable in a fickle industry. Beyond the singing, she is a serious songwriter, which is what kept Texas relevant across decades. I have a real fondness for that Scottish grit, the refusal to chase trends. She earns her place as a genuine survivor of British music.
