Shin'ichirō Mikami

There's something quietly compelling about an actor who grew up in Matsue — that misty lakeside city in Shimane — and then walked straight into the thick of Japan's golden age of cinema. Shin'ichirō Mikami did exactly that, and by 1960 he'd already picked up the Elan d'Or newcomer award, which tells you the industry noticed him early. Born in 1940, he came of age right when postwar Japanese film was hitting its stride, and I get the sense he was the kind of actor who did the work without making a fuss about it — the sort of craftsman presence that holds a scene together without demanding you look at him. He passed away in July 2018, and honestly, it's the understated professionals like him that you tend to appreciate more in hindsight, once you realize how much texture they quietly gave to an era.
