Shizuyo Yamasaki

Shizuyo Yamasaki carries two job titles in the record, comedian and actor, and I want to argue that the order matters less than the fact that both are listed at all. Comedians drift into acting constantly in Japan, but usually as guest turns, cameos where the audience is meant to recognize the comic rather than believe the character. Getting to the point where the second title is simply part of your professional description, not a novelty, requires convincing directors that you can put the comedy down and stay down. Born February 4, 1979, in Fukuchiyama in Kyoto Prefecture, she is the boke of the comedy duo Nankai Candies alongside Ryota Yamasato, and she has even competed as a boxer. What the bare listing does tell you is a range that most performers never manage, the willingness to be the funny one and then, on a different set, to be nobody in particular except the person the scene needs.
