My Take
The joke of Golden Bomber is that nobody plays anything: it is an air band, all lip-sync and choreography and nerve. The part I love is that the frontman running that joke writes every lyric, composes every song, co-arranges the lot, and can actually handle guitar, bass and drums when he feels like it. Sho Kiryuin is not miming because he cannot play. He is miming because miming is funnier, which is a far harder position to hold. Memeshikute became one of those songs that outgrows its own band, the kind you hear in karaoke booths and at office parties from people who could not name the group, and by 2014 he was standing in the room at the Japan Record Awards. That is the thing worth noticing: the presentation is completely unserious and the craft underneath it never slips for a second. Smart people make the best idiots.
