Shobhaa De

Shobhaa De fascinates me as a genuine cultural provocateur. Born in 1948 and educated at St. Xavier's, she turned the gossip and glamour of India's elite into bestselling fiction, earning the label the Jackie Collins of India. What I respect is not the scandal but the nerve: she wrote candidly about sex and society long before it was safe to. A journalist, novelist, columnist and socialite rolled into one, she has kept her pen and her opinions sharp across decades. That kind of fearless, multi-hyphenate stamina is rare, and I find it genuinely compelling.
