Shōhei Tsukahara

Honestly, there's something quietly compelling about a guy from Yuki City — a landlocked corner of Ibaraki that most people couldn't place on a map — who shows up to professional baseball standing 184 cm tall and just gets to work. Shohei Tsukahara doesn't seem to be the type who courts the spotlight; he spent nine seasons with the Orix Buffaloes, earned an All-Star nod in 2012 and pitched in 54 games as a setup man in 2016. But that kind of low-key focus is actually pretty common among players who came up grinding through schools like Tsukuba Shuei, where baseball is serious business and nobody hands you anything. Born in 1992 under Cancer — a sign people associate with stubbornness and loyalty, which honestly sounds like a decent personality spec for a team sport — he belongs to a generation that had to earn everything the hard way. I find myself rooting for the quiet ones who just keep showing up.
