Shōta Takeda

Shota Takeda arrived as a first-round pick and was already anchoring a rotation for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks while barely out of his teens. At 187 cm, with a curveball that fell off a table, he looked like the safest bet in Japanese baseball for a while. What interests me more is the part that came after. Pitchers who peak that early tend to spend the rest of their careers being measured against a version of themselves from age twenty, and the seasons where his name went quiet were read, unfairly, as an ending. The detail I keep returning to is that he is now with the SSG Landers in the KBO League. Crossing to another country to keep pitching is not a footnote; it is a decision most players never make, because it requires admitting the old path closed while refusing to accept that all paths did. Whatever his final numbers look like, that stubbornness is the more interesting statistic to me.
