Shōtarō Mamiya

Okay, Shōtarō Mamiya is one of those actors I keep underestimating and then feeling silly about. At first glance he's got that sharp, slightly unapproachable pretty-boy face, the cool Yokohama stare, and you brace yourself for someone coasting on cheekbones. Then he actually acts and just melts into the role, and you realize the looks were a distraction the whole time. What gets me is the range: he can go ice-cold and genuinely unnerving in a villain part, then turn around and play something warm and soft without it feeling forced. And off-camera he's goofy, totally unbothered, happy to look like a dork on variety shows, which only makes the on-screen control more impressive. He's a quiet craftsman hiding behind a face that almost works against him, and I suspect his best decade is still ahead.
