Shu Masuda

Shu Masuda was born in Nagasaki in May 1999, came up through Yokohama High School, and now plays infield for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows after starting his professional career with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks. He is listed at 179 cm. What draws me to a player like this is the part of a career that rarely gets written about. Yokohama High School is one of the famous baseball programs in Japan, so simply arriving in the professional ranks from there means he was already among the best of his age group. Then you get to that level and everyone was the best of their age group, and the playing time does not come. Changing organizations rather than quitting is a harder decision than it looks from the outside. He is still in his mid-twenties with no major awards to his name yet, and honestly that is the stage I find most compelling: the years where it is still genuinely undecided which way the story goes.
