My Take
Sir Mix-a-Lot is too often filed under one-hit wonder, and I think that sells him short. Yes, "Baby Got Back" topped the Hot 100 in 1992 and became inescapable, but the self-assured humor and unapologetic point of view behind it are exactly why it endured. Coming out of Seattle, far from rap's traditional power centers, he built his own studio and ran his own lane as rapper, producer, and occasional actor. I admire that independence; he never seemed to chase trends or approval. The hit was massive, but the durable thing about him is the stubborn confidence underneath it. That's the real signature.
