My Take
Sissy Spacek is, to me, the gold standard of American screen longevity. A Christmas-born Texan who won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1981 and was still collecting Golden Globe and Critics' Choice honors in 2001, then ensemble awards in 2011 — that is not a career, that is an institution. What I treasure most is her translucency: she does not perform emotions so much as let them pass visibly through her. Her songwriter side explains a lot; her best performances have musical phrasing, an instinct for when to hold a note and when to let silence work. Five decades in, she remains incapable of a false moment.
