My Take

Stephan James strikes me as one of the most quietly substantial actors of his generation. Playing Jesse Owens in Race could have been a trap — biopics of icons often flatten their leads — yet he won a Canadian Screen Award for it. Then, instead of cashing in on franchise work, he anchored Barry Jenkins' If Beale Street Could Talk, a film built almost entirely on stillness and tenderness. That choice tells me he values material over visibility. Toronto keeps producing performers with this kind of unflashy discipline, and James may be the finest of them. I suspect his best roles are still ahead, and I intend to keep watching.
