My Take

Conductors rarely get their due, and Denève is a case in point. Born in 1971 in Tourcoing, he now leads the St. Louis Symphony as music director while shaping young talent as artistic director of the New World Symphony. That second role is what wins me over: it is one thing to command a hundred musicians with a baton, another to invest in the players who come next. A Frenchman steering a great American orchestra carries a certain elegance, and I suspect his ear for French color and texture makes those programs glow. I would love to feel that live.
