My Take
Stephen Stills is, for my money, one of rock's great unsung craftsmen. Across Buffalo Springfield; Crosby, Stills & Nash; Manassas; and his solo work, he kept showing up at the center of records that defined an era, yet rarely demanded the spotlight. With over 35 million albums sold, the numbers are huge, but I'm more struck by his versatility as guitarist, singer, and songwriter all at once. There's a blend of intelligence and grit in his playing that feels distinctly his. He's the kind of musician other musicians revere, the architect inside those famous harmonies, and I think the era simply doesn't sound right without him.
