My Take
Steve Miller is, for me, the perfect summer-drive companion. Founding the Steve Miller Band in 1966 and remaining its constant center, he started in gritty blues rock and then reinvented himself into the breezy, hook-laden arena pop everyone can hum. I admire that kind of adaptability; rather than clinging to one sound, he updated himself for the times without losing his craftsman's touch. Those instantly catchy riffs still open up the sky for me. His 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction felt earned, and I suspect that very flexibility is why his music has aged so well.
