My Take
Steve Oedekerk is a personal favorite of mine, a comic engineer who commits fully to absurd ideas. As a key collaborator with Jim Carrey and Tom Shadyac on the Ace Ventura films, he helped shape an entire era of broad American comedy, but his solo experiments are what win me over. The Thumbmation shorts and Kung Pow! Enter the Fist, which redubs an existing kung-fu film, are gloriously deranged in concept yet meticulously executed. He writes, directs, produces and performs, which makes him a true author, not just a hired gun. To me, that willingness to chase a ridiculous bit with total seriousness is the mark of real comic genius.
