My Take

Stone Gossard is exactly the kind of musician I gravitate toward: the architect rather than the showman. As Pearl Jam's rhythm guitarist, and earlier in Green River and Mother Love Bone, he helped lay the structural foundation of Seattle grunge. Lead players grab headlines, but it's the riff-builders holding the floor who make a band breathe, and his playing gives Eddie Vedder's voice its room to soar. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nod is deserved, yet what I respect most is the unshowy steadiness. He looks like a sideman but functions as a core.
