Stormzy

Stormzy interests me as much for what he built around the music as for the music itself. Taking grime, a defiantly local London sound, to multiple Brit Awards and festival-headliner status required not just talent but a sense of mission, and he carries that mission visibly: scholarships for Black British students, publishing ventures, blunt political commentary. Vocally, his low, weighty delivery gives even simple bars a sense of gravity. I sometimes wonder whether the statesman role crowds out the rawness of his early freestyles, but that tension is precisely what makes his career compelling. Born in 1993, he still has decades to resolve it.
