My Take
Susan George embodies an era of British cinema I deeply respect. Holding her own opposite Dustin Hoffman in Straw Dogs at barely twenty-one announced a fearless presence, and her choices in Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry and Mandingo show an actress unafraid of provocative, demanding material. What elevates her in my view is the later pivot into producing and composing; she understood the machinery behind the camera, not just the spotlight in front of it. That breadth is rare and admirable. She carries the grit and independence of her generation of English actresses, and I think her body of work deserves rediscovery.
