My Take
For anyone who watched Japanese television in the late nineties, Takashi Sorimachi is Eikichi Onizuka. Great Teacher Onizuka should not have worked in live action, because the manga's delinquent turned schoolteacher is a cartoon by design, but Sorimachi played him with a flat, unbothered conviction that made the whole thing land. He was already the face of summer in Beach Boys, then went period with the taiga drama Toshiie to Matsu, carried Hotman, and now sits comfortably inside the long running detective series Aibou. Born in Urawa in 1973, he still works under a stage name that has long outlived his real one, Takashi Noguchi. He sang too, and one of those songs simply refuses to leave Japanese pop memory. What interests me most is how age has suited him. The pretty boy edge burned off somewhere along the way, and what is left photographs heavier and better.
