Takurō Tatsumi

An actor with a Kyoto University degree is not a common combination anywhere, and in Japan it is close to a contradiction in branding. Takuro Tatsumi, born in Osaka in 1958, has spent decades refusing to be filed under either label alone. He acts, he hosts, he stays visible on television long past the point where most performers of his generation quietly recede. At 181 cm he was never going to blend into a crowd scene, but height is the least interesting thing about staying employed for forty years in a business that discards people constantly. What strikes me is the absence of a single defining role in his public image. Usually that is a weakness. Here it reads more like a deliberate refusal to be pinned down, the Osaka instinct of never letting your own cleverness become the joke you cannot escape. He fronted the long-running food segment Kuishinbo! Banzai, played the first Mitsuhiko Asami in TBS's detective series, and was hailed as show business's quiz king on Heisei Kyoiku Iinkai; longevity that quiet is its own kind of achievement.
