My Take
On paper Tamayo Marukawa's path looks almost too neat: Kobe, an economics degree from the University of Tokyo in 1993, a TV Asahi announcer's chair, then a seat in Japan's House of Councillors from 2007 to 2024. But being recognizable and being re-elected are different skills. A familiar face gets you one campaign; seventeen years in the upper house is voters choosing you again and again. She worked on the Olympic and Paralympic side of government and holds the Paralympic Order. She is a divisive figure who draws plenty of criticism, and that longevity is still a fact worth taking seriously; in 2026 she won a seat in the lower house for Tokyo's 7th district.
