Tani Yuuki

Tani Yuuki is a singer-songwriter from Chigasaki, Kanagawa, born in 1998. What defines his songs is intimacy rather than expansiveness. He writes and composes his own material, and you can hear that in how the vocals are placed: close, conversational, addressed to one listener rather than a stadium. That is a deliberate choice, and it is harder to sustain than it sounds. A big arrangement can carry a weak lyric; a quiet one cannot hide anything. Japan has no shortage of young singer-songwriters working in this register, which makes durability the real test. Building an audience on the strength of the words themselves, rather than production or spectacle, tends to produce fans who stay.
