Tanya Donelly

Tanya Donelly is, in my view, one of the unsung architects of 1990s alternative rock. Born in Newport, Rhode Island in 1966, she co-founded Throwing Muses with her step-sister, helped form The Breeders with Kim Deal, then stepped forward to front her own band, Belly. What fascinates me is how she kept moving between landmark bands while remaining a creative core in each. Most artists burn out after one project, but she just kept generating new music. She never chased mainstream stardom, choosing substance over spectacle, and that is precisely the kind of artist I cherish.
