My Take
Taraneh Alidoosti is, to me, one of the most quietly courageous figures in world cinema. It is one thing to be a gifted actress; it is another to keep working at the highest level inside a country where doing so can carry real personal risk; in December 2022 Iranian authorities detained her over a post criticizing an execution linked to the protests. The Salesman gave global audiences a glimpse of her precision, but the critics' poll naming her the decade's finest Iranian actress tells the deeper story. What I admire most is the intelligence behind the work, evidenced by her parallel life as a translator. She strikes me as an artist who weighs every word, on screen and off.
