My Take

Taylor Dent is one of those players I root for in hindsight. A Californian who topped out at World No. 21 with four titles, he played a defiantly old-fashioned serve-and-volley game in an era that had already migrated to the baseline. That alone makes him interesting to me, a throwback chasing the net while everyone else dug in. What I admire more is the persistence: brutal back injuries kept threatening to end him, and he kept coming back. The numbers read as a solid career, but the texture underneath, stubbornness and style over conformity, is what makes him worth remembering.
