My Take
The Weeknd is, to my mind, the most complete pop auteur of his generation. Abel Tesfaye built an entire aesthetic — that gorgeous falsetto laid over dark, cinematic alternative R&B — and then scaled it from anonymous beginnings to stadium spectacle without diluting it. Most artists soften as they get bigger; he got stranger and more ambitious, treating albums and music videos as chapters of one long film. The trophy shelf, from Grammys to Canada's Walk of Fame, almost undersells the achievement. What impresses me is the discipline of the vision: every era is designed, every detail intentional. Toronto's most uncompromising export, and I mean that as high praise.
