My Take

What I love about Thomas Heatherwick is that you can never quite tell where sculpture ends and architecture begins. The Rolling Bridge that curls into a ball, the 2012 Olympic cauldron, the Shanghai Expo UK Pavilion, each one silences you with wonder rather than logic. The CBE, the Prince Philip Designers Prize and his honors are impressive, but the real engine seems to be an almost childlike curiosity. Leading a studio of around 250 people, he keeps dragging dreamlike objects into physical reality. I genuinely admire makers who bend convention just enough to slip a little magic back into our streets.
