My Take
Todd Phillips is the great shape-shifter of modern Hollywood. The director who made the world howl with The Hangover then pivoted to the bleak, Oscar-laden menace of Joker, and that range is genuinely rare. Born in Brooklyn, raised on Long Island and schooled at NYU's Tisch before dropping out, he understands both belly laughs and the rot underneath them, which I think is no coincidence. The best comedy directors know human darkness intimately, and Joker felt like Phillips finally turning that knowledge loose. Whatever you make of his polarizing instincts, he is a filmmaker who refuses to be predictable, and I always want to see his next move.
