My Take

Tommy Wirkola is exactly the sort of filmmaker I find irresistible: one who refuses to take genre too seriously. Coming from the far north of Norway and studying film in Australia, he built a voice out of blending horror, action and satire, most memorably in his Nazi-zombie romp Dead Snow. There is real confidence in making something that gleefully absurd and getting it into Sundance. I respect directors who treat genre as a playground rather than a cage, and Wirkola does that with a dark, dry wit that feels distinctly Scandinavian.
