My Take

Frankie Beverly is the real thing, an artist who built something lasting and stayed loyal to it. Fronting Maze out of Philadelphia from 1970 onward, he wrote, sang, and produced the kind of soul and funk that became the soundtrack to family cookouts and summer evenings for decades. He never chased trends; he made warm, communal music that simply endures. Losing him in 2024 at seventy-seven closed a remarkable run, but that voice will keep passing between generations. My take is that consistency at this level is its own form of genius, and Beverly mastered it.
