Tomokazu Miura

Tomokazu Miura won newcomer prizes in 1974 and 1976, which is usually where a handsome young lead's award shelf stops filling up. His did not. In 2008 he won a Blue Ribbon for Best Supporting Actor, more than three decades after he arrived, proof that he had quietly rebuilt himself from a romantic lead into the kind of character actor a production can lean on. Japanese audiences of a certain age still associate him with the films and dramas he made opposite Momoe Yamaguchi, whom he later married, and that chapter alone would have bought him a comfortable retirement. He kept working instead. The state noticed twice: the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2012, the Order of the Rising Sun in 2023. Born in Yamanashi in 1952, he looks to me like an actor who survived by changing his position on the field rather than by pretending not to age.
