Tony Alva

Tony Alva is a genuine pioneer, and I don't use that word lightly. As one of the Z-Boys and a father of vertical skating, he did the terrifying work of being first up the pool walls when nobody had a blueprint. Ranking eighth on Transworld's most influential skaters of all time feels almost modest given his impact. What I find compelling is that he never settled for being just an athlete: he played bass, built his own brand, and lived the culture fully. That Santa Monica restlessness reshaped a sport, and his fingerprints are still all over it.
