My Take
Tony Gonzalez is my kind of athlete: durable, consistent, and quietly historic. A two-sport star out of Huntington Beach who played both basketball and football at Cal, he then redefined the tight end position across seventeen NFL seasons — twelve with Kansas City, five with Atlanta. What impresses me is not a single highlight but the sheer longevity of staying elite for that long while taking that much contact. I have always preferred the marathoners to the flash-in-the-pan stars, and Gonzalez is a marathoner's marathoner. He is the rare player whose body of work, not any one game, makes the case for greatness.
