Toshikatsu Iwami

Toshikatsu Iwami isn't exactly a household name, but the broad strokes of his life tell a pretty compelling story on their own. Born in Himeji in 1941 — right in the middle of wartime Japan — he came up through one of the most turbulent stretches of modern history, and still found a way to land at Kyoto University, which is no small thing no matter what era you're talking about. From there it's a classic regional-elite arc: serious education, serious public service, a career in politics representing the people of Hyogo, and eventually the Order of the Rising Sun to show for it. That decoration doesn't fall into just anyone's lap — you have to have actually done the work. A kid from Harima who became an urban-planning professor and then spent four terms running his hometown as mayor? That generation earned their credibility the hard way, and I've got nothing but respect for that.
